Welcome to the Room 1 Ancient Civilisation Inquiry blog. Or big question this term was " How have technologies changed the lives of people over time?"
Our key understandings were - Ancient Civilisations developed tecnologies we still use today and technologies have changed over time and created the world we have today. We had to find technologies created by Ancient civilisations, upload the image and then put it on the timeline. We then had some wonderings about these technologies and researched information about these. As well as present our finding we had to record some information on the blog and link a relevant website.
We completed activities on the Multiple Intelligence sheet. We had to find similarities and differences between a technology in Ancient Civilisations and now. We shared our learning with other classes and learnt alot from the younger children!!
In the last week of term we had to use the BAR key ( bigger, add, replace) to improve a technology. Ruby and Jasmine made a new drinking straw - it worked!!
Roman Gladiators
The Provocator wore a wide brimmed round helmet, and a metal breastplate. They carried a small rectangular shield, and a straight bladed sword. The Retiarius wore an arm protector. They carried a trident, a lead weighted net and a small dagger. The Thracian wore a wide brimmed round helmet with visor and an arm protector. They carried a small round shield ad a small curved sword. The Secutor wore a small egg-shaped helmet with small eyeholes they carried a large oblong shield and sword.
Ancient Egyptian Carts and Chariots
The origional chariot was invented in Mesopotamia in 3000 BC . The Ancient Indians invented the wheel but the Egyptians improved it by making the spokes thicker and putting bronze or iron plates on the inside of the tyres . By Lili
Galileo's Water Thermometer.
The water thermometer was invented in the 1630's.Galileo took a small glass flask about as small as a hens egg,with a neck about two spans long,and as fine as a wheat straw. Galileo warmed the flask well with his hands. Then he turned it's head uupside down. He took his hands away from the flask and the water began to rise. This was the beginning of thermometers. Roman Aqueducts
Roman aqueducts are structures built to carry water. They can be big and tall like bridges and pipes or under ground like ditches, tunnels and canals. The Romans used them for carrying water and keeping Rome clean and healthy. By Dylan
Roman Aqueducts
The aqueducts were built in 312 BC. They were made from stone, brick and volcanic cement. Roman workers used cranes to lift big stone blocks to the top of the aqueducts. They could make aqueducts 30metres high. They used them for bath houses and fountains, to fire fight, for toilets and to keep the city clean. Aqueducts were used as a form of irrigation or pipes to bring water to the city. By Seamus

Poor Ancient Chinese people had homes built from mud bricks and their roofs from different types of reeds. Richer people had homes built from wood and tiles which were either painted with gloss or paint. By Fergus
Ancient Olympics
The first Olympic games were held in Olympia in 776BC. The main events included riding, horse and chariot racing, javelin, discus, boxing, long jmp, running (sprinting), wrestling and the pentathlon. The pentathlon was made up of five events; running, wrestling, long jump, javelin and discus. The star event was the sprint.
Greeks Invented the Anchor
In the ancient Greek times a plain stone was used to hold the boat in place but they didn't know how to get the arm to bury itself.The Greeks then made an anchor with two arms.The anchor was quite often hung over the stern and when it was being used Buoys were used to mark where the anchor was. The Greeks used rocks for anchors, they had to be huge. The anchor with 2 arms dug into the bottom and meant the anchor was lighter.
Ancient Fire
When people discovered fire the started to cook their food constantly. Fire made food softer to eat that was good for the old and young. When people sat around the fire they started to tell storys that helped them get better at talking. When food was cooked it was safer to eat. By Noah
The Roman House
The roman houses were grouped around two rooms the Atruim and peristylium. The Atruim was the hall and the Peristylium was the indoor garden. The front door was in the Atruim and opened into a small passage way. There was also a servants door at the side of the house. But this was only for the wealthy people and poor had apartments.
